Today, at the Toronto Reference Library I attended a presentation on
addiction given by Dr. Gabor Maté @ 2 p.m.
Dr.Gabor Maté works at the Portland Hotel in Vancouver’s Downtown
Eastside.
His 4th book dealing with the dynamics of addiction is highly acclaimed:
"In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts: Close Encounters with Addiction". (See

What he said that resonated most with me is that addicts like the feeling
of *NOT* being addicted.
And he quoted from Thomas Merton, my favorite author: a British homo-
sexual sex addict + Columbia University grad who became a Catholic
American Trappist priest who said that the goal of all spirituality is to
become a Buddha, an independent being: not to be dependent on any-
one or anything.
Dr.Gabor Maté was invited by the City of Toronto Harm Reduction Pro-
gram to do speak @ the Toronto Reference Library on the topic of drug
addiction.
The TWIST on this is that I'm in the Toronto Harm Reduction Program on
the 4th floor of Seaton House put there - NOT BY CHOICE - by the Gov't
along with other homeless people + a lot of undercover cops who "terror-
ize" the place by calling the homeless (some with mental problems) nogs,
pieces of shit, goofs, trash, ... .
They'll even set themselves up in a shared room of 6-persons with their
own *huge* TVs etc. to make the point that they're KING OF THE HILL.
The staff also seems to include undercover cops who let these other un-
cover cops who live among the homeless have their way.
PLUS!
I've been subjected to outrageous treatment by THESE GOONS!
But I digress.
Dr. Gabor Maté points out that an addict is *NOT* an addict BY CHOICE.
An addict is a human being just like U+me.
An addict can overcome his addiction if given the *proper* emotional
support.
Dr. Gabor Maté says by allowing the System MARGINALIZE, OPPRESS,
and BLAME the addict for his/her problem saying such things as they are
to blame for making POOR CHOICES, only creates more STRESS and
STRESS the MAIN MOTOR of addiction.
In other words, THE SYSTEM CONTRIBUTES TO THE PROBLEM be
cause it incorrectly believes its the addict's fault that s/he is an addict.
Dr.Gabor Maté refutes this argument saying that an addict does NOT
chose to be an addict anymore than a person with a sedentary lifestyle
choses to have a heart attack.
Dr.Gabor Maté says an addict has to be seen for what s/he is, a SICK
person that NEEDS HELP just like the person who has a heart attack.
Dr.Gabor Maté is therefore an ACTIVE SUPPORTER of Vancouver in-
jection clinic where drug addicts can be revived whenever they overdose
in the clinic.
However, Dr. Gabor Maté pointed out that THE GOVERNMENT under
Mr.Harper wants to close the Vancouver Eastside Injection Clinic down.
The Minister of Health, Tony Clement, alleges that the Vancouver East-
side Injection Clinic in encouraging young people to become drug ad-
dicts.
Consequently, Dr. Maté calls the Minister of Health the Minister of Dis-
ease because DRUG ADDICTION IS A DISEASE that require treat-
ment like any other disease and an injection clinic provides that.
He says such fallacious thinking by the Health Minister is RIDICULOUS!
I, as President/Party Leader of the Égalité Party of Canada, the É(eh)PC,
am TOTALLY! IN FAVOUR of the Vancouver injection clinic because it's
provides an important step in the recovery process of persons who have
been emotionally battered and who can barely get from day to day.
By the way, last year I spent from mid-April till the beginning of July in
Vancouver spending on average 6 days out of 7 in Vancouver’s Down-
town Eastside and went by the clinic when there because it's right by
the Carnegie Community Centre where I could use the library and have
FREE access to a computer though I had to pay $1 to the Centre for
an annual membership.
What is INCREDIBLY! SHOCKING is that our Canadian Court System
will find drug addicts guilty when they did NOT! have a choice in commit-
ting the a drug-related crime and canNOT be found to be guilty of a crime.
Ironically, MOST PEOPLE IN JAIL are there on DRUG-RELATED crimes
and have NO BUSINESS being there because they are SICK and NOT!
criminals.
Why?
In COMMON LAW for there to be a crime, the person MUST HAVE HAD
A ***CHOICE*** TO COMMIT the crime OR NOT.
This fact CLEARLY INVALIDATES THE LEGITIMACY OF THE CANA-
DIAN JUDICIAL SYSTEM that wants higher conviction rates year after
year because IT'S GOOD FOR BUSINESS: that's the view of the É(eh)PC.
Sentencing these people is clearly a TRAVESTY OF JUSTICE.
It's in all likelihood GOOD BUSINESS for the undercover cops, the Police,
prisons, judicial system, but places a TREMENDOUS *UNNECESSARY*
BURDEN on the Canadian taxpayer.
The É(eh)PC is AGAINST putting INNOCENT PEOPLE in jail who are
SICK.
By doing so, THE FASCIST POLICE STATE GOVERNMENT OF CANADA
IS NOT ACTING IN THE PUBLIC INTEREST: it's NOT ACTING FOR THE
PEOPLE, but AGAINST THE PEOPLE.
THAT IS NOT! RIGHT.
Incidentally, an É(eh)PC lead Government would treat UNNECESSARY
GOVERNMENT SPENDING as A CRIME.
For CLEAN! Government FOR! the PEOPLE
whose spending is monitored BY! the PEOPLE,
JOIN or/and SUPPORT the É(eh)PC,
for a better life for ALL! Canadians.
